“It’s not good that people keep sending their rubbish to landfill. We don’t have enough space to last forever. I’ve always tried to recycle or reuse items. I like that where I live now supports me to continue to recycle.”

Australia is getting better at recycling. As a nation, our recycling rate has improved 57% over the last 15 years[1]. However, science tells us we need to do much more, much faster, to reduce the impact of waste on our environment.

That’s why our residents and team at Springwood Greens Care Community, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, are so proactive in caring for the place they call home.

The Greater Blue Mountains Area was included on the World Heritage List in 2000 in recognition of its significant natural values. Its unique plants and animals relate an extraordinary story of the evolution of Australia’s distinctive eucalypt vegetation and associated flora.

Already dedicated composters, our residents and team were concerned that recyclables were going into general waste. So, they organised and allocated specific bins in the Care Community for recycling, with a scheduled recycling pick up each week. Every day they make sure to dispose of empty glass and plastic bottles in those bins, keeping general waste to a minimum.

Now, the Care Community generates one fewer general waste bin for every scheduled collection. With over 50 residents and 75 team members, plus countless visitors in our care Community, it’s just one of the ways they act to make a difference for our place and planet.

“I like to recycle as it saves landfill. I feel I’m doing something to help look after our world. We live in a beautiful area with a lot of wildlife.”
