The proactive family:
aged care planning for parents
3rd September 2024 | 4 min read
“They were married for 60 years, always so family-focused, and very involved in their community. I knew we needed to plan early to help them adjust.” – Lynelle, daughter of residents Robyn and Geoffrey at Rutherford Park Care Community.
Transitioning into aged care
For Lynelle, helping her parents transition into residential aged care was made easier by one important decision: planning for aged care. As Robyn and Geoffrey started to need more support, Lynelle realised that proactive planning could enable them to choose a care environment together, rather than waiting for their health to decline.
“One of our friends said, ‘Start early so they can assimilate,’ and it turned out to be the best advice,” she reflects.
Choosing Rutherford Park Care Community: a positive experience
After visiting Rutherford Park Care Community, Lynelle knew it was the right choice for her parents.
“The team at the front desk were so welcoming, and the whole place felt warm and home-like,” she shares.
Lynelle recalls, “I thought, ‘This is where Mum and Dad can feel at home.’”
Our compassionate team at Rutherford Park understood her parents’ needs, and Lynelle’s Mum quickly became involved in daily activities that made her feel valued and engaged.
Supporting changing care needs
Our team at Rutherford Park was attentive to Lynelle's parents’ evolving needs and kept Lynelle informed every step of the way.
“They always ring me and say, ‘We’re just going to do this with your mum and dad, are you happy with that?’” Lynelle says. She appreciates how our team involved her mother in meaningful ways, understanding her desire to stay active.
“Mum likes to busy herself, so they’ve invited her to help set tables and join in with functions, which has made her feel valued,” she explains.
This proactive approach to planning has not only benefited Lynelle’s parents but also brought Lynelle peace of mind, knowing her parents are living in a safe and supportive environment.
“Dad will say to me, ‘I love this. I’m so glad we’ve moved here,’” she adds, seeing how much he has settled into his new home.
Lynelle’s decision to take a proactive approach to aged care planning enabled her parents to settle at Rutherford Park Care Community together, avoiding the pressure of an unexpected move. Our team at Rutherford Park have helped Robyn and Geoffrey maintain their independence and dignity, enriching their daily lives with personalised care.
