Mum’s choice: staying connected with family in aged care
15th October 2024 | 4 min read“I even asked her last week, ‘Mum, are you happy here?’ She said, ‘Oh, I think it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I couldn’t have looked after myself at home, Jenny.’” – Jenny, daughter of resident Adelina at Bankstown Terrace Care Community.
Embracing change
When Jenny’s mum, Adelina, faced health challenges after COVID-19, she made an unexpected decision.
“Mum was so independent, so when she said, ‘I don’t really think I want to go home,’ I was shocked,” Jenny recalls.
Known for her resilience as a lifelong caregiver for her son, Adelina saw moving into aged care as a way to ensure her own wellbeing while staying close to family.
Finding a welcoming care community
At Bankstown Terrace, Adelina found an environment that values her as an individual.
“As soon as you walk in there, you feel that it’s home. Everyone knows everyone by their first name,” Jenny says.
This personal connection has allowed Adelina to feel truly at ease in her new home.
Staying connected with family and community
Living at Bankstown Terrace has allowed Adelina to maintain close family ties and find meaningful engagement in ways that matter most to her. Her son Russell also lives at our Care Community and, with visits from her other children, Adelina’s family remains a central part of her life.
Jenny says, “I couldn’t have looked after Mum myself at home… I couldn’t have,” reflecting on how Bankstown Terrace has supported her Mum’s wellbeing and independence. Adelina’s contentment in her choice has been reassuring for Jenny and her family.
