A love story: aged care for couples

Proactive Family aged care planning for parents

“My Mum and Dad are just the most wonderful people. They were married at 18, and the war intervened. But through mum’s nurturing and good cooking, he was well again, and to this day, I thank the Lord that I’ve got him as my Dad.” – Vicki, daughter of residents John and Daphne at Rutherford Park Care Community.

A lifetime of love and the transition to aged care together

For John and Daphne, their bond has been unwavering through every stage of life. When John decided it was time for them to move into residential aged care at Rutherford Park Care Community, Daphne was initially reluctant.

“She was obstinate. ‘I am not leaving my home. John can go, but I’m not,’” recalls their daughter, Vicki. After looking for aged care opportunities for couples and the nearby support from family, Daphne agreed, and they moved in together, keeping their love and companionship intact.

Enjoying life and staying active at Rutherford Park Care Community

Vicki’s parents have found joy in the welcoming environment at Rutherford Park.

“It’s enormous, and there’s a lovely dining room where they all join together. I love going and having a dance with them—it’s just wonderful,” Vicki says.

Her parents, now Australia’s oldest living married couple, continue to enjoy life together.

“Dad especially loves it. He’ll say, ‘I love this. I’m so glad we’ve moved here,’” Vicki says.

Supporting changing care needs

As her Mum's care needs have increased, Vicki is grateful for the attentive team at Rutherford Park.

“They never leave him. Five or six team members will come in, ask him how he is, offer him a cup of tea,” she explains. “They love Mum and Dad.”

At Rutherford Park Care Community, Vicki’s parents continue their journey together with the support they need, surrounded by loving care. Vicki’s parents live each day with dignity, companionship, and the joy of shared memories.
