Living well again: supporting personalised care in aged care
29th October 2024 | 4 min read“There’s no way we could look after her at home to the degree that she deserved to be looked after.” – Peter, son of resident at Bossley Parkside Care Community
Finding the Right Care for Complex Health Needs
Peter’s mother, Maria, has lived with multiple health conditions for many years. Her journey included managing depression and schizophrenia, which required regular care from her family. “She’d be okay for a couple of years, and then she’d have an episode,” Peter shares, reflecting on how he provided the support Maria needed. However, a serious fall changed everything. “She fractured her patella, ended up with sepsis, and it was four and a half months of hell,” he says. This incident prompted Peter to look for full-time care.
Choosing Bossley Parkside Care Community
When deciding on the best care option, Bossley Parkside Care Community was a natural choice. Maria had previously volunteered at Bossley Parkside, making it a familiar and comforting environment. “It’s only a three-minute walk from our place,” says Peter, adding that our team’s friendliness and dedication put them at ease. “They’re very dedicated, and finding the right people that you feel you can entrust with the care of your loved one is so important,” he notes.
Managing Complex Health Needs
With Maria’s unique care requirements, including both mental health management and physical rehabilitation, the support at Bossley Parkside has been invaluable. “The team ensures she gets her medication” explains Peter. Through the support of our Bossley Parkside team and a personalised program reablement program at our Wellness Centre with allied health provider, HCA, Maria's mobility and mental wellbeing are being managed “She’s gotten to the stage now where, with help, she can actually stand and even make new friends,” Peter says.
At Bossley Parkside Care Community, Maria receives the professional support she needs to live well and comfortably. Peter reflects on his family’s positive experience, saying, “Nursing homes have had this stigma, but our personal experience has been absolutely great.” For Peter, knowing his mother is safe, happy, and close by has brought peace of mind and a renewed sense of optimism.
