Relationship Reset: Margaret and George’s Journey in Residential Aged Care

“I became totally a carer that I didn’t really want to be.”  – Margaret, wife of George, resident at Glenmore Park Care Community.

Navigating dementia care: a journey together

When George was diagnosed with dementia, his wife Margaret found herself taking on a new role that shifted their relationship. Known for his humour and sociable nature, George’s diagnosis gradually changed their lives.

“It was terrible… it was such an emotional rollercoaster,” Margaret recalls.

Over time, the role of caregiver weighed heavily, affecting their relationship.

Finding support with residential aged care

After careful consideration, Margaret and George decided that Glenmore Park Care Community was the right environment to support the next chapter in their lives.. Margaret appreciated our team’s focus on understanding George’s unique personality, ensuring he maintained his individuality.

“Everyone treats him that way. He’s George, and he’s a unique person. He is not a resident or a patient, you know, he’s George.”

From small things like ensuring George wears his usual clothes, to meaningful conversations about what George values in life, understanding George’s unique needs and preferences helped him feel safe, comfortable, and respected.

Rebuilding their relationship through care

At Glenmore Park Care Community, the care from our team has enabled Margaret to reconnect with George as his wife, not just his carer.

“It’s made me feel much more like his wife again,” she says.

For Margaret and George, moving into residential aged care at Glenmore Park Care Community wasn’t just about finding care; it was about rediscovering their relationship.
